Kilt Pins
Claidmhor, Highland and Reproduction Kilt Pins
he Claidmhor pronounced "Claymore" (91, 96 etc) meaning "big sword" was the original highlanders sword and was often of incredibly large and heavy proportions requiring the use of both hands. The Scottish Clansman was a magnificent swordsman who spared no effort in finding the finest blades available, as evidenced by the number of Italian Ferrara and Toledo blades on ancient Claidmhors and Broadswords in the hands of collectors and museums. In the famous McIan print of Charles Edward Stuart, he is shown leaning on this sword, the blade of which is curved under his weight... to demonstrate the temper of the steel.
The Kilt Pin became fashionable in the 1800s and has continued to this day, universally worn on all kilts or kolted skirts. Highlanders invariably elaborated the metal parts of their wearing apparel either by the use of precious metal or by introducing Cairngorm stones, polished pebbles or jewels; and this practice later extended to kilt pins such as those illustrated on this page. The four dirk kilt pins (99, 105, 103, 106) are designed to match the various styles of sgian dubh available.
Among these reproduction kilt pins are the Wallace (SL12) which was used with devastating effect in defence of freedom by Sir William, and the Bruce (SL14) which is a miniature of the King of Scots' sculpted sword. The Keppoch (108) is a replica of the famous Basket Hilted Broadsword used by the ill-fated Alistair Mcdonnel of Keppoch, who in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 charged single-handed against the Hanovarians. Another sword used on that fateful day is the Culloden (SL13): discarded on the battle field the original survives to this day. The 108 pin is also available without red felt (code 108B) to allow the hues of the tartan to be seen through the basket hilt.
Each item is hand wrought in old fashioned pewter, polished and plated with palladium to give a silver appearance that resists tarnishing and scratching.
